ROBOX

Expanding the industrial use of Robust Oxidative Biocatalysts for the conversion and production of alcohols (ROBOX)

Oxygen functionalities represent the most abundant and important functional groups in chemicals and materials nowadays used and applied in polymers, fine and agro chemicals, vitamins, flavors and fragrances as well as active pharmaceutical ingredients.

The EU funded ROBOX project will demonstrate the techno-economic viability of bio-transformations by developing new robust biocatalysts for the conversion of oxygen functionalities in the pharma, nutrition, fine/specialty chemicals and materials market.

For demonstration four types of robust oxidative enzymes were selected: P450 monooxygenases, Baeyer-Villiger Monooxygenase, alcohol dehydrogenase and alcohol oXidase for which target reactions have already been validated on lab-scale. The collaboration with renowned academic partners and biocatalytic technology providers ensures that the remaining scientific and technological challenges for the development of robust biocatalysts for these reactions will be adequately addressed. By combining cutting edge research and development with a range of targeted demonstrations, this innovation action will bridge the gap between lab and industrial scale in the use of oxidative enzymes for these specific market segments.

The group of Prof. Schwaneberg (Lehrstuhl für Biotechnologie, RWTH Aachen) is involved in the evolution of new robust P450 BM3 monooxygenase variants for improved conversion of aromatic precursors for industrial use.

The ROBOX project has received funding from the European Union (grant agreement n° 635734) under EU’s Horizon 2020 Programme Research and Innovation actions H2020-LEIT BIO-2014-1.
