The 13th International Symposium on Biocatalysis and Biotransformations -BioTrans 2017- took place from 9th to 13th July in Budapest, Hungary. It was organized by the Hungarian Chemical Society and Budapest University of Technology and Economics with significant contribution of COST Action Systems Biocatalysis. Around 500 participants from 43 countries and 5 continents attended. The conference covered a broad range of topics including single and multistep biotransformations, biocatalyst discovery, development and de-novo design, enzyme engineering by structure guided directed evolution, industrial bioprocess development, enzyme immobilization, compartmentalization and microreactors. All four Schwaneberg group members showed their work by poster presentation. Alexandra Weingartner and Anna Gärtner presented their work on evolution of cytochrome P450 BM3 towards aromatic hydroxylation and improved performance of allylic oxidation, respectively. Shohana Islam showed her latest results on first KnowVolution of an aryl sulfotransferase towards sugar building blocks. And Mehdi Davari presented the success stories in directed protease evolution in his poster. The next BioTrans will take place from in 2019 in Groningen, the Netherlands.
