The 20th International Conference on Cytochrome P450: Biochemistry, Biophysics and Biotechnology - took place from 27th to 31st August in Düsseldorf, Germany. The biennial event was hosted by Prof. Vlada B. Urlacher from Heinrich-Heine University Düsseldorf and brought together 220 researchers and students from 28 countries who study cytochromes P450. The conference covered a broad range of topics including bioinformatics, biophysics and structure analysis, drug metabolism, mechanism studies and drug design as well as P450 biotechnology and the introduction to novel P450 functions and reactions. Five Schwaneberg group members showed their work by poster presentation. Four of them, Alexandra Weingartner, Anna Gärtner, Dr. Anna Joelle Ruff and Dr. Alan Mertens, are funded by the ROBOX project from the EU’s Horizon 2020 Program. They presented their work on evolution of cytochrome P450 BM3 towards aromatic hydroxylation and improved performance of allylic oxidation as well as the utilization of OmniChange multi-site saturation mutagenesis for P450 BM3 evolution, respectively. Yunus Ensari showed his latest results on KnowVolution of cytochrome P450 BM3 for synthesis of hydroxy-fatty acid methyl esters. Prof. Ulrich Schwaneberg was invited to give a talk in which he highlighted eighteen years of directed P450 BM3 evolution: lessons and success stories. The next ICCP450 will take place in 2019 in Brisbane, Australia.
